Put Down that Remote

Updated: Aug 22, 2020

Like myself and many of us, our quarantine has made us spend more time with our significant other, family, and/or roommates within our own residence. My pre-COVID routine was coming home from work, making dinner, and then at 7:00pm watching two old episodes of The Big Bang Theory on CBS. Following that, I would get ready for the next day and go to bed (I like 10-hours of sleep). If you are working from home, you've most likely continued to spend your day in front of a computer - or in my case the television (even if I wasn't completely paying attention to what was on). So why should we spend the evening in front of another screen? I'm talking about your TV! Not only has that been noted to be bad for your eyes, but it is also bad for your mental health and most likely your relationships.

Since COVID quarantine started, many businesses have started to get creative. You shouldn't come up with any excuses that there isn't anything else to do except watch a television show or movie! A little effort would be noticed and be beneficial to your family's mental health. Below are some things you could do within your residence to spark creativity:

Board & Brush - has many locations throughout the states. During COVID, they started offering take-home kits. There could be more local based companies near you that are offering similar take-home kits. In the Indianapolis area, we have Kicasso Sneaker Art Bar who is offering Kicasso in a Box. What another fun way to be creative! Something fun for the kids could be Darling Diva's Party in a Box.

Another activity that we have been doing together is picking out a game each week and trying to play it nightly. The winner at the end of the week is whoever has won the best of 5 games. You can also purchase a subscription to a delivery box company! There is truly something for everyone:

Date Box Club - Their box includes"everything you need for an amazing date night. We curate every DateBox, include all the elements to execute it perfectly, including step by step instructions. Our dates are themed to get the most out of your evening. The dates are designed to help couples do something new & fun together, and most importantly connect."

Happily - A great alternative, "Get everything you need for a fun, romantic date night every month so you can spend time with the one you love the most!"

Try the World - Gives you food items you might not easily find in your local grocery store. Go ahead and make a night theme and find a recipe that co-insides with your destination!

Escape the Crate - If you like Escape Rooms for the puzzles, you might enjoy this! "Now you can bring all of the fun of an escape room into your own home...with a different adventure delivered every other month.  Imagine escaping from a pirate ship, unraveling alien languages, solving murder mysteries, and defusing time bombs all from your own living room."

Another idea is to find out what National holiday it is and make your evening fun around the event. I think that the National Day Calendar has been put together nicely! Maybe look in advance each week so you can properly prepare for the upcoming days. On September 1st is National Chess Day. Yes, I don't know how to play it but wouldn't that be a great excuse to take the time that day to learn it?

The internet is also more great resources, especially for free instructional videos. A few years ago my husband took dance lessons before going on a cruise. Not only was it great physically, but it was an activity we were doing together. There isn't a good reason not to try it at home first!

The key is to remember that every day is a gift, so make it special! Please, at least don't keep watching the same TV show that you've seen multiple times.

**This was not a paid endorsement just recommendations I had seen on social media.**
