Away Weekends @ Home's Introduction

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

On March 16, 2020, like many other people around the world I began working from home. It was supposed to only be for a few weeks to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus. At first, it started out fun - something different from my usual routine. I set up my desk in my French-inspired living room, turned on PBS in the background, and had lunch daily with my husband. But over time, more and more places and restaurants started to close. Being at home every day, all day, quickly became dreary. I needed an escape.

I have a knack for creating events and not to brag, but I've become quite a good cook. Growing up with a mom who was always entertaining during a holiday, graduation, wedding, and other parties throughout my childhood led me to go into the hospitality industry. After getting married we quickly moved to the other side of the country, where I became the 'hostess with the mostest' when friends and family came to visit! My new job with Marriott gave me a family that I could make desserts for. My current job is with a modern travel agency, where I was able to express more of my creativity with planning their 40th-anniversary party. From there, we designed the DASH Club, where each month we would have themed "Wine Down Wednesdays". I think my favorite event was 2019's Day of the Dead.

With weekend activities being closed, it only made sense to find a fun yet budget-conscious plan to disconnect from our daily routine and make life a little more special during this new normal. The key to do this is to think about the items you already have at home or you know a friend or family member can loan you. I love France, London, Disney, food, and cocktails. You'll soon see that the first weekend was French-inspired. To make it a successful weekend, you'll need a plan, food, a few movies or tv shows that fit the theme, and an activity or two. I found many of my ideas using the internet, which helps keep the costs low. Then thanks to having a color printer at home, I was able to dive deeper creatively! Instead of a full weekend, you can also start off small with just a single themed day.

My name is Amber and I hope you enjoy this fun little blog! I look forward to providing you with fun inspiration suited to your interests to have fun Away Weekends @ Home!
